Moby-Dick

A design binding of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, the W. W. Norton edition (1976, 1st printing) illustrated by Warren Chappell, with commentary by Howard Mumford Jones. Text and notes prepared by Harrison Hayford and Hershel Parker. Bound in blue morocco over sculpted boards, with white whale of natural goatskin. The whale was designed by Nashville artist Jennifer McQuistion, who is known for her woodburning and painting. The title is tooled in blind above the whale, with a parade of small fish tooled in silver. The bottom headband is sewn over a round core in white and tan, with endpapers of a printed decorative paper in wave patterns mirrored by the sculpted boards. Inner joints are of blue morocco, and the top edge of both boards and text have been carved into waves. This book was shown in the MAAP gallery in 2013, through the Master Artist Apprenticeship Program sponsored by the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists. It went to a dealer in Europe.
